Bokrijk | VAKlab x Michaël Verheyden
For Milan Design Week 2025, VAKlab presents a striking beehive-shaped pavilion with a thatched roof, designed by Belgian designer Michaël Verheyden and created by artisans from Bokrijk. Inside this organic structure, visitors can discover seven exclusive objects, created by Verheyden and handcrafted by artisans from the VAKlab community.
This project highlights the importance of local craftsmanship on the international stage, addressing the growing demand for sustainable and authentic production in the design world. The pavilion’s design draws inspiration from traditional half-timbered houses with thatched roofs, a building technique that remains relevant today. Reflecting the form of a beehive, the structure embodies the connection between craftsmanship and nature.
Visitors encounter the objects through strategically placed openings in the thatched walls, enhancing the experience and evoking a sense of mystery. The collaboration between Verheyden and the VAKlab artisans results in a unique installation where design and craftsmanship enrich each other, unlocking new creative possibilities.
Located in Belgium, the domain of Bokrijk showcases craftsmanship in various ways. Next to an Open Air museum and a nationwide service role, VAKlab is Bokrijk’s innovation centre with a focus on craftsmanship and entrepreneurship. By placing the artisan at the forefront in a design world where they often remain unseen, VAKlab strengthens and develops contemporary and innovative craftsmanship as an added value to the economy and other sectors. In doing so, VAKlab also supports and connects creators, designers, students, startups, and entrepreneurs in achieving their dreams and ambitions.
