Darmes and Alex Joncas
by Darmes
Darmes and Alex Joncas: a showcase of collaborations and creations. Darmes unveils two new lighting collections born from creative partnerships.
Doppler, a collaboration between Belgian designer Florian Martin and Alex Joncas, explores the perception of waves through light. 1979, created with Canadian designer Will Choui and Studio Darmes, draws inspiration from the Brutalist and Modernist architecture that shapes Choui’s city.
With humility, Alex Joncas, head designer of the Canadian lighting studio, presents his first personal work: Bois D’Œuvre. This piece captures the imprint of the wooden forms used in the original mold, crafted from standard construction lumber (2x4). Made from Pine, Fir, or Spruce—species predominant in Canadian forests at risk of wildfires—each vase is unique, shaped by the mold’s gradual degradation. Rooted in the Wabi-Sabi philosophy, the smoked black glass evokes the traces of fire, materializing the emotions stirred by these natural disasters.
2016. Alex Joncas and Gildas Le Bars found Darmes. Headquarters are established in the Quebec Laurentian Mountains, where Joncas pushes his practice, grounding the studio’s vision in his exploration of form, simplicity, and a collaborative approach to design. Alongside a team of selected creators and artisans, they foster a culture of reciprocity and innovative synergy. Partners in crime in both life and design, Joncas and Le Bars handle their craft with bold honesty and curiosity. Their human touch on industrial techniques generates timeless pieces. A testimony of their deep respect for materials and passion for enduring concepts.
