Küzem jün / Wool theories captures Dunie Design team’s desire to learn from Central Asian nomadic crafts centered around wool.
In Kazakh there are several On the territories of modern Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia wool was always a focal piece of material to create shelter, decorate them and persevere through the harsh weather. We as modern urban citizens try to learn from this material that is used in many ways for different type of creations to understand its mobility, resilience and durability for our own realities.
Our very first result in this on-going research took form of a shym-shi (weaved reed mat) and syrmaq type of carpet. Made in collaboration with local artisan and avid craft learners we bring to Alcova 2025 a fruit of our collective labour.
Established in 2020 by designer Assel Nussipkozhanova Dunie's initial goal is to create furniture and household objects in collaboration with local artisans and craftspeople. In 3 years they worked on art direction of Gazhap Dunie exhibition, Auyl restaurant, cafe Fika in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
In the end of 2023 Assel partnered with Ruana Esengosova, who became a co-founder and an investor of the brand.
Currently Dunie is a female run Almaty-based design studio creating its own design objects, working on art direction and design branding of local businesses and learning to experiment with design inspired by Central Asian crafts techniques.
