OFF PILLAR

by Leilei Wu

During Alcova, Leilei Wu will present the site-specific sculpture Off Pillar in the Baroque garden of Villa Bagatti Valsecchi, situated on the historic pedestal of a missing sculpture (booth A1). Off Pillar refers to an extension beyond the pillar, where the ancient architectural elements of the pedestal, intricate ornaments, and the marks of time create a unique context. The sculpture breaks free from the traditional function of the pillar, transforming into a more liberated, decentralized expression. It emphasizes the sculpture’s own growth and self-supporting nature, forming a stark contrast between the materiality of history and the virtual possibilities of the future.

Leilei Wu is a contemporary artist currently living and working in Milan, Italy. Her practice unfolds across media such as 3D-printed objects, installation, experimental images, web art, and AI research. Leilei Wu draws inspiration both from organic shapes and synthetic materials to develop a unique hybrid-form sculptural language and to disturb the physical, social, computational, and metaphysical planes of reality through a playful practice and a speculative, science-fictional approach. Her work questions new technologies of production, reproduction and distribution, with an emphasis on exploring the relationship between art and technology, ecology, mythology and poetic thinking.
