PORTAL
by Decibel x Vizcom
PORTAL is a celebration of design untethered—where technology allows ideas to move freely and take shape anywhere. By harnessing large-format 3D printing, Decibel removes the constraints of traditional manufacturing, enabling designers to teleport their creations across the globe and bring them to life instantly. Designed by Charles Birshaw, PORTAL is a living installation that explores how digital tools are reshaping creative workflows and expanding design possibilities. Featuring 10 new chairs designed by renowned designers worldwide, each digitally developed before being crafted by Caracol’s robotic 3D-printing system - reducing waste, minimizing transport emissions, and embracing circular, localized manufacturing. Several designs were shaped using Vizcom’s AI-powered tools, accelerating cross-continental collaboration and bridging the gap from sketch to production. Ahead of the exhibition, Vizcom hosted a global competition, with the winning design to be printed live at Milan Design Week—offering a glimpse into the future of sustainable, on-demand production.
PORTAL shows how technology can reshape design on a global scale.
Decibel is redefining furniture design through large-format 3D printing, transforming waste into sculptural, functional pieces. With 85% of plastics and millions of tons of furniture in landfills, Decibel repurposes materials to keep them in circulation. Partnering with designers worldwide, Decibel enables custom, complex pieces impossible with traditional methods.
Vizcom is building AI for designers to retain control, ownership, and authorship of their work. By turning sketches into renders, motion, and 3D, it accelerates creativity without replacing it. At Milan Design Week, Vizcom and Decibel showcase how AI-driven design and sustainable manufacturing are shaping the future.
