Sun Catcher
by Rive Roshan X SOL R&D
Sun Catcher is a site-specific installation presented at Villa Bagatti Valsecchi that reactivates the historic site’s fountain. This installation’s radiating arch is designed to catch the sun’s light. As one approaches, the form is reflected in the water below, completing the circle, creating an illusion of the sun. Amsterdam-based design studio RIVE ROSHAN collaborated with SOL R&D — a startup specialized in aesthetic photovoltaics to harness the innovative material’s selective light reflection, playing with color-shifting layers that delight the eye while also generating solar energy. The energy harvested during the day is stored in a battery and used to subtly light the installation after dark.
Rive Roshan is the artistic practice of Ruben de la Rive Box (Netherlands) and Golnar Roshan (Australia). Based in Amsterdam. The studio creates art objects, design objects and immersive installations that endeavour to shift perspectives and capture transience.
Through exploring the interplay of light, colour, space and material, Rive Roshan aim to create sensorial experiences and invoke curiosity.
SOL-R&D is a PV material development and consultancy studio based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. For years we have been developing photovoltaic material compositions with a focus on design freedom and appearance that is unmatched in the industry.
