T.o.y.s.

by Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle

‘T.o.y.s.’ is a three-day workshop at BURG led by Designer Philipp Witte. It is scheduled from 31 March to 2 April, after which the results will be shipped directly to the former SNIA Factory. All visitors are invited to use the objects to relax at our site. We just would like ask you to ‘Take Off Your Shoes’.
At the Workshop a group of interior design students are tasked to design and build upholstered objects that can comfortably seat at least four people. The students are given three materials: Fibres from recycled mattress covers (wool, cotton, polyester), undyed cotton twill, which is conventionally used for hidden pull-out parts of sofas, and polyester rope. Each team can pick an additional structural material of their choice. Our aim is to get a quick and hands-on approach to large upholstery by working on a 1:1 scale and dealing with the real weight and size. Afterwards the students will work on more elaborate designs in the coming semester project (‘Soft Seating’ with guest professor Bastian Müller), focussing on circular materials and constructions that do not require large quantities of foam.

Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle has an exceptional profile in the German university landscape. Since 1915, the BURG has offered outstanding training and study conditions with two faculties and over twenty degree programmes. With over 1,000 students, it is one of the largest universities for art and design in Germany. The university has well-equipped studios and workshops and is part of an active network of research institutions and companies. The BURG offers Bachelor's, Master's, teaching and doctoral programmes as well as a master class for art students. Designer Philipp Witte currently works for BURG, developing exhibitions at international design platforms.
