GRUZ

In recent years, as displacement and migration have reshaped the meaning of home, Irina Razumovskaya has been thinking about what it means to belong. Her project GRUZ takes as its subject the emotional terrain inhabited by those who have left Russia, a community suspended between nostalgia and estrangement, affection and shame. For many, home is now an abstraction, both cherished and disavowed.
Razumovskaya’s sculptural side tables speak to this paradox. Inspired by the monumental forms of early Soviet constructivism, they hover between function and symbolism, architecture and domestic object. Their thick, grounded bodies recall the heavy weight of attachment, the buildings that cannot be carried away. Yet as furniture, they will go on to live in new homes, quietly performing their task. In that gesture art is becoming useful again, sculpture turning toward habitation. Razumovskaya suggests that belonging might not be fixed to a place after all, but to the life that continues around it.

PALATY is a St. Petersburg gallery of contemporary design and art, founded in 2020 by Yulia Loboyko. The gallery represents Russian culture through art and design objects, acting as guides and storytellers of the country's diversity.
