Sky-Set & Ondara Mirror

by DACE SŪNA

Sky-Set & Ondara Mirror

Both Sky-Set and Ondara Mirror explore the dialogue between light, matter, and the natural world—translating atmospheric and aquatic phenomena into sculptural form. They express a fascination with how air and water interact with light, creating shifting perceptions of color, depth, and movement.

Sky-Set is a layered opalescent glass light that captures the ever-changing hues of the sky—from cool blues to sunset reds—drawing inspiration from Rayleigh scattering, the optical phenomenon responsible for the sky’s color. Its circular form recalls dendrochronology, echoing tree rings that trace the passage of time and environmental change. The shifting tones also evoke the atmospheric effects of wildfires, where particles in the air transform light into surreal shades of orange and red. The work reflects both the wonder of our atmosphere and the fragility of the ecosystems that sustain it, urging a reconnection with the natural world.

Ondara Mirror emerges from the slumped glass technique, where recycled glass is softened by heat and naturally settles into fluid, wave-like forms. Its shape evokes the gentle movement of water and the graceful glide of manta rays—a form inspired by a personal experience diving with these majestic creatures in the Pacific Ocean. Finished with a vacuum mirror coating, the piece maintains the glass’s translucent depth while gaining a reflective sheen that shifts with light and perspective. Each Ondara Mirror is unique, shaped by the size and behavior of the reclaimed glass.

Together, these works celebrate transformation and the elemental poetry of light.

Dace Sūna is a Latvian designer exploring the relationship between space and light. Guided by a deep connection to nature and the elemental forces of gas, fire, water, earth, and plasma, her work bridges design, science, and poetry. She holds an MA in Contextual Design from the Design Academy Eindhoven and a BFA in Interior Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. Her master’s project, Cosmic Dancer, received the Latvian Design Award in Spatial Design. Now based in Latvia, she focuses on glass as her primary medium and lectures at the Latvian Academy of Arts.
