SUR+PLUS

by AtMa

Surplus is not accidental; it is embedded within the system of production itself.
Under the formula of  “required quantity + a few percent,” materials inevitably remain beyond the plan.
SUR+PLUS is a project that designs a framework to receive these materials  rather than treat them as waste.
In this work, joint components connect fragments while preserving cracks, chips, and traces of time, holding differences intact..
What emerges is a form of coexistence — connected while carrying difference.
It reveals what production structures have long overlooked and suggests a possible mode of coexistence in contemporary society.

Founded by Makoto Suzuki and Ayumi Koyama, AtMa is a creative studio working across disciplines. Moving between commissioned spatial design and self-initiated projects that quietly question contemporary social conditions, their practice unfolds fluidly. Through a material-led approach, they explore the relationships and possibilities inherent within space itself.
