WASTED WASTE
by UMPRUM Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague
The interdisciplinary project brings together four studios from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, responding to the unique Broumov region in north-east Czechia, known for its Baroque heritage and long-standing textile production. Through a collaboration between fashion, product design, and photography, students engage with discarded clothing. They transform materials from a textile waste center into new products or document the process, reflecting on the environmental and social impacts of local and global fashion systems. Rooted in a specific place, WASTED WASTE explores questions of design responsibility and the relationship between local practices and global modes of production.
A leading art and design academy internationally recognized among Europe’s prestigious institutions, UMPRUM was founded in 1885 on Semper’s principles. It thrived during the First Czechoslovak Republic and endured the harsh communist regime. Around 500 students across 28 studios are guided individually to develop creativity, independence, and social responsibility.
